With so many cheap flights around, Egypt is one of the most affordable long-haul destinations. Packed full of stuff to see and do, this ancient country will wow you no matter what your budget. Book one of the Egypt holidays from Monarch, and don’t miss out on doing any of the following 10:
1) The Pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza.
The most famous site in all of Egypt is a must see. It may be full of tourists, but once you get there, you’ll understand why everyone else is there too. The enormous structures are something to marvel at, as is the story behind them. If you’re looking for a real show, go after dark, when the pyramids are lit up in technicolor and their history is told to the soundtrack of atmospheric music.
2) The sunrise from Mount Sinai.
It won’t cost you a penny to climb Mount Sinai, though it’ll take a bit of energy. Climb it at night and the view from the top as the sun rises is absolutely worth it. The colours are spectacular, and on the way back down, you’ll get the chance to visit St. Katherine’s monastery, which is built on the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush.
3) Ride a camel.
Think riding a camel would be just like riding a horse? Think again. The enormous beasts are surprisingly tricky to get stable on, but you’ll see the best of the desert from the back of one of them. If you organize a ride direct with the local tribesmen, you’ll get a real bargain too.
4) Meet the Bedouin tribe.
The nomadic tribe who resides in the Sinai desert have a wonderfully unique way of life. Learn how they make bread or their handmade jewelry, and share in a traditional Egyptian meal. Most settlements welcome visitors for free. However, bring some change to buy a few gifts for your friends back home.
5) The Valley of the Kings.
The site of 63 three spectacular tombs, this area should not be missed. When you pay your entry fee, don’t bother with the extra tram ticket – it’s only a short walk, and the views are worth being on foot.
6) The Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
This museum is stuffed with historic artifacts, and the mind-boggling hoards of the ancient Pharaohs. If the government has ruled something too fragile or precious to leave the country, it’s probably in this museum, which means the collection is like nothing else in the world.
7) Go Sand boarding.
If you’re a snowboarder and missing the snow, or you’ve never tried strapping yourself to a board and want to have a go, the dunes are the perfect place to go for a ride. You’ll have a nice, gentle landing when you fall over (as you inevitably will) but prepare to get sandy!
8) The Red Sea.
If you’re a diver, there are few places more famous for its underwater life than Egypt. The warm waters play host to a rich diversity of fish, many of which you’ll even see on a paddle from the beach.

9) Egypt’s Second City.
Most visitors miss out on Alexandria, but if you have time, it’s definitely worth a visit. The Roman ruins in the National Museum, the Citadel, and the Catacombs are just a few of the things to see in this beautiful seaside town.
10) The White and Black Deserts.
Either of these deserts will convince you you’ve been transported to another planet. With strange rock formations and even stranger colours, you mustn’t miss the chance to see some of the most unusual natural landscapes.
